Best Tyres for Monsoon and Wet Roads in India (2026)

Which tyres on sale in India stop shortest in the wet, according to independent tests, what Indian law requires of wet grip, and what to check before the rains.

How this guide judges wet grip

Only two kinds of evidence count here. The first is an independent group test, run by a motoring club or magazine, of a tyre that the brand's own Indian website lists today. The second is a test a tyre maker paid for, which we show in its own table and label as commissioned.

That rule removes a lot. Most instrumented tyre tests are run in Germany and Britain, on European sizes, and several of the tyres that win them are not on sale here; others are sold in India under a similar name but as a different product, such as Bridgestone's Turanza 6i (India) and Turanza 6 (Europe), so a result for one cannot be credited to the other. No Overdrive or Team-BHP instrumented multi-brand test was found, so Indian roads have no equivalent of an ADAC table yet.

Two scoring systems appear below. ADAC and Auto Bild grade on the German school scale, where a lower number is better (1.0 to 1.5 is "very good", 1.6 to 2.5 "good"). Where a test published stopping distances, they are in metres from 100 km/h, and Auto Express, which scores each tyre as a percentage of the best in that test rather than in metres, is shown by its placings and gaps instead. Our full method is on how we rank.

1. Which tyres sold in India have the best independent wet results?

The table lists every independent result we could source for a tyre that is on sale in India, best wet evidence first. The size tested is rarely the size on your car, and the European version may differ from the one sold here.

Auto Bild also ranked the Michelin Primacy 4 second of ten in its 215/60 R17 compact-SUV test, the Creta and Seltos size, though that page gives no wet figures. Michelin India lists the Primacy 4, but whether it is sold in 215/60 R16 or 185/65 R15 here is not confirmed; those two ADAC results describe the European tyre.

2. Which car tyres give the shortest braking distance on wet roads?

Two Auto Bild tests published wet stopping distances in metres, from 100 km/h, for tyres that include India-market models. They are the clearest answer available to how much the choice of tyre matters when the road is wet.

In the SUV test, the gap between the Pilot Sport 4 SUV and the last-placed tyre was 13.7 m. Dry stopping varied far less, by about 5 m.

Which tyres help reduce stopping distance in the rain?

On this evidence, the Pilot Sport 4 SUV is the only tyre sold in India that has topped a published wet-braking table. Continental's PremiumContact 6 has two strong independent safety results among India-sold models: an ADAC win and 2nd place out of 50. Pirelli's two Cinturato P7 versions sit mid-table in the wet.

3. Where Michelin wins in the wet, and where it does not

Michelin comes out of these tests with one clear wet-braking win and a set of strong overall placings. It also has one recent result that cuts the other way.

The win is the Pilot Sport 4 SUV, sold in India and rated 5 stars under the Bureau of Energy Efficiency label, which Autocar Professional reported is based on rolling resistance and wet grip. Its 49.9 m was the shortest wet stop in Auto Bild's SUV test, 2.2 m ahead of the Goodyear EfficientGrip 2 SUV.

The Primacy 4 placed 2nd or 3rd in three separate tests. Its wet grades, though, trailed the leaders: 2.5 in ADAC's 215/60 R16 test against Continental's 2.1, and 2.0 in 185/65 R15 against the Bridgestone Turanza T005's 1.7 (the T005 is unverified for India). In the 215/60 R16 test its placing came from dry grip (1.7), fuel use (1.4) and wear (1.5), not from the wet.

The Primacy 5 is the harder story. ADAC's 2026 test put it 7th of 16 with a driving-safety grade of 3.2, while its environment grade of 1.8 was second best in the field, and in Auto Express's 2026 test it was 3rd for wet braking but last for dry handling, with the lowest rolling resistance of the eight. The Primacy 5 is an efficient tyre with competitive wet braking, and buyers who rank wet handling first should know it has not led an independent test.

4. Why the most-quoted wet-test winners may not apply in India

Many Indian buying guides quote European winners without checking whether the tyre is sold here. The table shows what happened to each.

5. What does Michelin's own India wet test show?

Of the brand claims we could read on a primary page, only Michelin's names its Indian-market rivals and an Indian track. It is commissioned, which means Michelin chose the tyres, the size and the tester, and the result belongs in its own box.

These are the only wet numbers we found for the India variants Turanza 6i, UltraContact UC6 and BluEarth-GT AE51. They sit awkwardly beside ADAC's 7th place. One reading is that the India test pits the Primacy 5 against a different, India-market field, at Creta size, on an Indian track; another is simply that Michelin chose the rivals, the size and the track, and then chose to publish the result. Both can be true.

Other brands' India claims that came up, CEAT's NATRAX benchmarking and an Apollo Alnac 4G "10 m" figure, were not read from a primary page, so they are left out. Goodyear ran a 2017 demonstration in Thailand where its EfficientGrip Performance SUV stopped from 80 km/h in 24.5 m, "a whole meter shorter" than a Continental, as Autocar India reported. Goodyear organised it.

6. How do Indian brands do in the wet?

Independent wet data on MRF, JK Tyre, Apollo and CEAT tyres is close to non-existent. Two results exist, and neither is flattering.

  • CEAT SecuraDrive was knocked out in Auto Bild's 2024 qualifying round, listed under "braking distances too long" with 33.3 m wet. It is the only India-market pattern from an Indian brand we found measured against the premium brands. Separately, evo India measured a SecuraDrive stopping from 100 km/h in 43.89 m against 48.16 m for a Kia Sonet's unnamed factory tyres (evo India, 2020); the surface and the source of the tyres are not stated.
  • Apollo Alnac 4G placed 27th of 50 in ADAC 2023. Apollo's India range carries the same name, but whether the European and Indian tyres share a compound is unverified.
  • MRF and JK Tyre appear in no independent test we found.

Some Indian-market tyres are sold on their wet claims. Goodyear calls its Assurance TripleMax "Maximum Braking Ability, Maximum Wet Grip & Maximum Control" and gives the TripleMax 2 the line "Stop Faster, Drive Safer" (Goodyear India); the Wrangler TripleMax uses "HYDROGRIP Technology" (Goodyear SUV range). Bridgestone says the MY02's "lightning grooves" channel water away (Bridgestone India). These are brand claims, and none has an independent test behind it in our sources.

7. How do you read wet grip on an Indian tyre?

India has no label that tells a buyer how one tyre's wet grip compares with another's. What it has is a pass mark and a voluntary star rating.

Rule or labelWhat it coversStatus
ISI mark, IS 15633Every new car tyre sold in India, imports includedCompulsory since the 2009 Quality Control Order
AIS-142 wet gripMinimum wet-grip test, plus rolling resistanceIn force for new and existing designs from 1 January 2024 (G.S.R. 453(E))
AIS-142 rolling soundNoise limitFrom 1 October 2024
BEE star labelRolling resistance, with a minimum wet gripVoluntary as last reported (Autocar Professional, 2022)

AIS-142 is a floor, not a grade. A tyre either passes the wet-grip test or cannot be sold, and the score is not printed on the sidewall the way a European label grade is. The AIS-142 limit values themselves could not be read, because the ARAI copy of the standard was unavailable.

Do BEE stars tell you about wet grip?

Partly. A tyre can earn BEE stars only if it also meets a minimum wet grip, but the stars themselves rank rolling resistance, so a 5-star tyre is one that rolls easily and has cleared the wet-grip floor, not a measure of how well it grips. Michelin's Latitude Sport 3 and Pilot Sport 4 SUV hold 5 stars; so do CEAT's SportDrive, SecuraDrive and CrossDrive. CEAT's SecuraDrive is 5-star rated and was still knocked out of Auto Bild's test on braking distance, a reminder that the stars are not a braking score.

8. How much tread depth do you need in the monsoon?

The law sets the floor: Central Motor Vehicles Rules, rule 94(3)(iv), requires at least 1.6 mm of tread on a car tyre, measured below the tread wear indicator (Indian Kanoon). Michelin India says a tyre "must be replaced" once any groove is at or below 1.6 mm (Michelin FAQ).

Brands advise going earlier. Apollo recommends "replacing your tyres after the tread wears below 2.3mm instead of waiting for the tyre to hit the legal bottom line of 1.6mm", and gives a new Alnac 4G's tread as 7.5 mm (Apollo). Michelin's commissioned Creta test shows what wear costs in metres: the Primacy 5 needed 30.5 m to stop in the wet when new and 37.6 m when worn to 2 mm.

You may see a "3 mm for the monsoon" rule on some blogs. We found no law, standard or brand source behind that figure, so treat it as advice and not a rule.

9. What is aquaplaning, and how do you avoid it?

Michelin India defines aquaplaning as "the separation between the surface of the tyre and the road created by a layer of water" (Michelin India). It builds up as speed rises or as more water lies on the road.

Michelin's prevention advice is short:

  • Check tyre pressure once a month.
  • Slow down in heavy rain.
  • Switch off cruise control.
  • Look far ahead for standing water.

If the car starts to aquaplane, the same page says to keep the steering straight, avoid sudden lane changes and slow down gradually. It also gives separate skid-recovery steps for front-, rear- and four-wheel-drive cars.

Which tyres are worth buying to reduce the risk of aquaplaning?

No independent test in our sources reports a separate aquaplaning score for a tyre sold in India. Wet-braking results, plus enough tread, are the best available guide.

10. Monsoon tyre checklist

Michelin's alignment page names "hitting a kerb, driving into a pothole" as common causes of misalignment, and says it leads to poorer road holding and early tyre wear. Monsoon potholes make that check worth doing in August as well as June.

11. Which tyre should you buy for the monsoon?

Match the evidence to your wheel size, because that decides which tyres you can actually fit. Find your size on the car tyre price guide, or on the 215/60 R16 page and Hyundai Creta page.

Your carTyres with wet evidenceWhat the evidence is

Performance cars, 18 inchMichelin Pilot Sport 5; Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6Joint 2nd in ADAC 2025, no wet split published

Our pick for an SUV on 17-inch or larger wheels that does most of its driving in heavy rain is the Pilot Sport 4 SUV, because it is the one tyre on sale here with a published wet-braking win. Michelin India's recommended price for the line starts at ₹20,300 (michelin.in, checked November 2026, subject to change), so it is not a cheap choice. The India-made versions of these tyres may behave differently from the European ones that were tested; nothing we found says either way.

For a 16-inch car, the honest position is thinner. The Primacy 5 has the strongest wet numbers at that size, but they come from Michelin's own test, and the one independent test it faced placed it mid-field. Compare prices across brands on the price page and read the best car tyres in India and best tyre brands guides for the wider picture.

Monsoon tyre questions

Which are the best car tyres for wet roads and the monsoon in India?
On independent evidence, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV, which had the shortest wet stop in Auto Bild's 2023 SUV test, and the Continental PremiumContact 6, which won ADAC's 2022 test with the best wet grade listed. Both are sold in India. For 14- and 15-inch wheels, no tyre confirmed on sale in India at those sizes has an independent wet test.
Which car tyres give the shortest braking distance on wet Indian roads?
No independent test has been run on Indian roads. On European tracks, the shortest wet stop by an India-sold tyre was the Pilot Sport 4 SUV's 49.9 m from 100 km/h. Michelin's commissioned NATRAX test put the Primacy 5 at 30.5 m against a 38.6 m rival average, at an unstated speed.
Is the Michelin Primacy 5 good in the rain?
It brakes well in the wet but has not led an independent test. Auto Express placed it 3rd of 8 for wet braking, and ADAC ranked it 7th of 16 overall with a weak driving-safety grade. It had the lowest rolling resistance in the Auto Express test and the second-best environment grade in ADAC's.
Which tyres provide dependable grip during heavy rain?
Tyres with good independent wet results and enough tread. Of those sold in India, the Pilot Sport 4 SUV and PremiumContact 6 have the best records. Any tyre worn close to 1.6 mm loses much of its wet grip.
What is the minimum tread depth for a car tyre in India?
1.6 mm, under rule 94(3)(iv) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. Apollo recommends replacing at 2.3 mm. A "3 mm monsoon rule" has no legal basis that we could find.
Does India have a wet-grip label like Europe?
No. Since 1 January 2024, AIS-142 requires every car tyre to pass a wet-grip test, but the result is not printed on the tyre. The BEE star label ranks rolling resistance and was voluntary when last reported.
Are Indian tyre brands good in the wet?
There is very little independent data. CEAT's SecuraDrive was eliminated from Auto Bild's 2024 test for long braking distances, and an Apollo Alnac 4G was 27th of 50 in ADAC 2023. MRF and JK Tyre have no independent test results we could find.
How often should I check tyre pressure in the monsoon?
Once a month, as Michelin India advises, and before any long drive in the rain. Set it to the figure your car maker specifies.
